Discovery Health is now the largest open medical aid in South Africa and has a range of plans to suit every budget. There are three different hospital plans only options on Discovery Health. These hospital plan medical aids are within the Core Series. It includes :
- Classic Core and Classic Delta Core
- Essential Core and Classic Delta Core
- Coastal Core
All hospital plans also offer a chronic illness benefit but there is no day-to-day cover.
Classic Core
Offers unlimited cover at private hospitals but with the Delta option this is only within the Delta Network of hospitals as defined by Discovery Health. If you wish to go to a private hospital out of this network then you need to pay a R5,000 upfront payment to the hospital. The Classic Core hospital plan covers medical specialists and other healthcare professionals up to 200% of NHRPL rates.

- Adult Dependent = R 1 062 (Classic Core) / R 849 (Classic Delta Core)
- Child Dependent = R 539 (Classic Core) / R 432 (Classic Delta Core)
Essential Core
Similar to the Classic Core plan, the Essential Core option offers unlimited private hospital cover but with the Delta option it is only within Delta Network hospitals. There is a R5,000 upfront payment if you opt to go to a private hospital outside of the network as defined by Discovery Health. The difference with the Essential Core hospital plan is that it only covers medical specialists and other healthcare professionals up to 100% of NHRPL.

Coastal Core
A popular option among coastal dwellers in South Africa, the Coastal Core hospital plan from Discover Health offers unlimited cover at any coastal private hospital. There is no network restriction. If you opt to use a private hospital that is not considered as a coastal facility then Discovery Health will only pay 70% of the rate and the member is responsible for the other 30%. The Coastal Core option pays only 100% of NHRPL rate to medical specialists and other healthcare professionals.
